Absorption

Yesterday, we conducted an experiment to test which material would best absorb water. Out of newspaper, magazine, kitchen paper and plastic, we discovered that kitchen paper was the most absorbent and that plastic is waterproof. We performed a Fair Test giving each material the same amount of water and the same time to soak. The variable was the material changing each time we carried out the experiment.

Land Yachts

Last Week, 2nd and 3rd Class designed Land Yachts that were powered by wind energy. We had lots of fun choosing our materials, creating our design and making our Land Yachts. We encountered some problems along the way but we overcame them by testing them and in the end we had a race. We measured how far the Land Yachts traveled under the fair test of equal time to each team. After the race, we decided what went well and if we were to design them again, what would we do differently.

Christmas Play 2017

Last Friday we were treated to a wonderful performance from our Junior & Senior Infants acting out ‘The Nativity’ and 1st & 2nd Class performing ‘The Christmas Carol’. Great singing and acting from everybody involved. Well done to all of our students!

Liam McCarthy visits Crumlin!!!

There was great excitement in our school when Galway players Brian and Paul Flaherty brought the Liam McCarthy along with the Bob O’Keefe, Irish Press and National League Cups to our school. It was a great visit and huge thanks to all involved for organising the special occasion. The players were happy to answer all the children’s questions and sign lots of hurls, jerseys and sliotars! Let’s hope we’ll see Liam again many more times in our school!

Maths Day Parade!

Once again this year we had a very enjoyable Maths Fashion Parade! Well done to all who made a huge effort and produced amazing outfits for the day!

Heart & Lung Dissection!!

Brady’s Butchers in Athenry kindly gave Ms.Murphy a cow’s heart and lungs for us to observe and dissect! It was an eye opening experience for everyone and a lot of the children found it hard to believe that our hearts actually do look like a cow’s heart!

Visitor from Brigid’s Garden

On Thursday the 5th of October, Will Softly (in association with SEAI) visited us from Brigid’s Garden and held workshops with Senior Infants, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

Will informed the students of the various renewable and non-renewable sources of energy and had lots of fun with the pupils through games, puppets and dress-up. He gave us some great energy saving tips.

Will also demonstrated how chemical energy can be converted into electrical energy using apples!

Thanks Will for a great day!

Self-inflating Balloon!

Last week, 2nd and 3rd Class made a self inflating balloon! When you mix vinegar and bread soda a chemical reaction takes place. The chemical reaction makes a gas, carbon dioxide, that fills the balloon.

What is Soil Made of?

2nd Class learned that soil is made up of different elements. It is made up of minerals (rock, sand, clay), air, water, and organic material (matter from dead plants and animals). We also experimented and realised that if we put soil in a jar, the heavier soil and stones sink to the bottom whilst the twigs and debris float to the top.
