Discover Primary Science and Maths Award

Fantastic News!

Crumlin N.S. have been successful in receiving the Science Foundation Ireland Discover Science and Maths Award for 2018. Our plaque was delivered earlier this week. Big thanks to all our little scientists and wonderful parents who helped us in organising various science, technology and maths activities both inside and outside the school. The pupils had a great year with all their extra days out, school visitors and workshops. Well done C.N.S!

Maths Trail

Last Thursday, 3rd Class made the most of the sunshine and brought their learning outside. They participated in a Maths Trail around the school. The children worked in pairs to work out various questions about the maths in our environment. The children estimated, answered and checked, their answers together and discussed their findings in class afterwards. We estimated how many windows were at the front of the school, how many doors and checked our answers afterwards.

We also used the car park to look at the various cars, number plates and sorted the cars into groupings. We really enjoyed using the outdoors for maths and had great discussions when discussing our answers. We used problem solving skills, paired work, and team work during this exercise. We had a lot of fun!

Maths stations

Throughout the year, third and fourth class have been busy doing maths stations. Here are a few pictures of us busy at work.

Liam McCarthy visits Crumlin!!!

There was great excitement in our school when Galway players Brian and Paul Flaherty brought the Liam McCarthy along with the Bob O’Keefe, Irish Press and National League Cups to our school. It was a great visit and huge thanks to all involved for organising the special occasion. The players were happy to answer all the children’s questions and sign lots of hurls, jerseys and sliotars! Let’s hope we’ll see Liam again many more times in our school!

Visitor from Brigid’s Garden

On Thursday the 5th of October, Will Softly (in association with SEAI) visited us from Brigid’s Garden and held workshops with Senior Infants, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

Will informed the students of the various renewable and non-renewable sources of energy and had lots of fun with the pupils through games, puppets and dress-up. He gave us some great energy saving tips.

Will also demonstrated how chemical energy can be converted into electrical energy using apples!

Thanks Will for a great day!
