Many thanks to all our WOW Day Walkers this week. We had a total of 95 students out of 123 stepping it out. Fantastic effort from students and parents alike. Even family pets made an appearance!!
Huge congrats to 1st, 4th and 5th Class who came joint First Place and won ‘The Golden Boot’. Their three classes had a total of zero students coming to school by car. This is a fantastic achievement and well done to all involved!
Today was the launch of our first Walk On Wednesday and what a great day we had! All of our walkers were treated to a healthy breakfast, kindly cooked by Mrs Molloy and Fiona and sponsored by Flynn’s of Lackagh and Ryan’s of Laragh. Throughout the day, Athenry First Responder Group gave a CPR lesson to students from 1st class up. Thanks to all the students and parents who made the effort to walk to school and thanks to everyone involved that made our first WOW Day a very memorable one. Keep up the great work C.N.S.
Today, Second Class made the best of the glorious sunshine and planted some seeds in the school’s raised beds. We planted Carrots (Early Nantes), Turnip (Snowball) and some Mixed Lettuce. Senior Infants are also waiting for their Potatoes to sprout which they planted last week 🙂
Last Thursday, Ray met with some parents regarding our next steps in attaining the Travel Flag and how they can help. Many thanks to the parents who attended this meeting.
Ray also discussed with all classes on how children around the world travel to school.
C.N.S is participating in the Green-Schools Travel Programme over the next two years. Â This year, we are invited to take part in THE BIG TRAVEL CHALLENGE by promoting a sustainable mode of transport for the month of February.
We are asking students of C.N.S. to make an effort to car pool (where possible) for the first two weeks of February; Monday the 1st – Friday the 12th (inclusive)
Over the next two years C.N.S. are working on achieving the Green Flag for Travel. Yesterday, Ray Foley (Green Schools Travel Coordinator) from An Taisce visited our school. He took Rang 2 and the Green Schools Committee to complete a Walkability Audit. Here, the children has to assess the roads near the school to see how suitable they are for walking. The pupils also had the task of identifying problems or risks with the nearby roads, taking a traffic tally and measuring distances using a trundle wheel.
With the help of the children, Ray compiled a report noting potholes and large verges as our main areas of concern. Ray will forward this report to the County Council which will hopefully make the roads leading to our school more safe and suitable for walking.
Last week, Ray Foley (Green Schools Coordinator) visited our school and made a video of some of our pupils appealing to world leaders at the climate summit in Paris to reach an agreement to tackle climate change.
They appear with other schools from the West of Ireland. Follow the link to see the wonderful job they did;
The video also made ‘The Irish Times’ website 🙂
On Friday the 27th of November, our school was asked by ‘An Taisce’ to be guest speakers at the Green Schools Water Day. Some of our Green Schools Committee made a presentation, informing other schools of what C.N.S. completed in order to be awarded their Water Flag. Well done Amelia, J.P., Michael and Shane on delivering a fantastic presentation. You all did C.N.S. proud. 🙂
5th & 6th class were lucky to have a visit to the Abbert river where Kevin Crowley from Inland Fisheries showed us all the abundant life found in the river. He caught some young trout, salmon and stickleback fish for the classes to see. It was an extremely informative and interesting visit and a rare opportunity to appreciate the beautiful river and it’s habitat. Many thanks to Kevin and Inland Fisheries.
Last Thursday (21.05.15), Crumlin N.S. were invited to the Radisson Hotel, Galway in order to receive their third Green Flag for Water Conservation. Sinead Coleman, Megan Cooley, Ciara Joyce and Ms. Murphy went to accept the award and were treated to a delicious lunch, thanks to An Taisce. The school will be raising the new flag on the 18th of June. Congratulations to the Green School’s Committee and to all pupils in C.N.S. for their efforts to save water in our school and homes.
