World Water Day

Wednesday, March 22nd is World Water Day.

World Water Day is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. Today, there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to home.

As a Green-Schools, our work on – and maintenance of – the theme of Water is helping to spread awareness of the Global Goals and of water issues locally and across the world.

C.N.S. are holding a ‘Walk for Water’ event. Walking for Water involves walking six kilometres with six litres of water (distance and weight will be adapted for younger students) to highlight the average distance walked in countries with issues of water scarcity by women and children to access clean water.

We hope to participate in Walking for Water on the 22nd of March, weather permitting. We will set off on our walk at 9.30am. 2nd to 6th Class will walk 6k with 5th and 6th carrying the 6 litres. Juniors to 1st will walk a shorter distance. Grandparents, Parents and families are invited to join us for this very important event.

Travel Action Day

On the 22nd of February, C.N.S. held their Travel Action Day and what a day of action it was!! It started off with the majority of our pupils walking or cycling to school in their fancy dress attire. They were then treated to a healthy breakfast, kindly served by Mairead, Marie and Sharon and sponsored by Donegal Foods and Flynn’s of Lackagh.

Two members of Athenry Fire Brigade visited the school with the fire truck and gave a fire safety talk. Next, we got to hear lovely stories from Abby’s Granny about how she travelled to school. Anne Browne also gave a lovely presentation about where she travels to with her work.

The day finished with a display of an electric car and parents were invited to visit each classroom to view projects, art work, experiments and listen to songs and poems completed by the children based on the travel theme.

Huge thanks to all the parents, grandparents and past pupils who helped out and contributed to our Action Day. Thank you also to our wonderful students for their very creative costumes and enthusiasm about the occasion. It was a very enjoyable and memorable day.

Visit to New Motorway

On the 14th of February, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th Class took a trip to the new Gort-Tuam Motorway. They were accompanied by Sisk engineers Noel Curtis and Alan Mullane. Our Green-Schools Travel Officer, Ray Foley also joined us for the day. The students learned about the percolation area off the Motorway which helps prevent flooding and also how the wildlife was taken into consideration when the road was been constructed. The children also had to opportunity to ask the engineers what their jobs entailed of. We may have some budding engineers after our day out!
